| SUMMARY |
| Fenoxaprop-ethyl is an obsolete phenoxypropionic herbicide and auxin plant growth regulator for control of woody plants and broadleaved weeds on land and in aquatic situations. It has a low aqueous solubility but is soluble in many organic solvents. It is not normally persistent in soil systems but may be in water systems depending on local conditions. It is not volatile and, based on its physic-chemical properties, it is not expected to leach to groundwater. Fenoxaprop-ethyl is moderately toxic to fish, aquatic invertebrates, algae and earthworms. Human oral toxicity is considered to be low but it may be an irritant. No information on chronic health impacts have been identified. |
| Hazard alerts |
The following Pesticide Hazard Tricolour (PHT) alerts are based on the data in the tables below. An absence of an alert does not imply the substance has no implications for human health, biodiversity or the environment but just that we do not have the data to form a judgement. The alerts for Highly Hazardous Pesticides (HHPs) are based on applying the FAO/WHO (Type 1) and the PAN (Type II) criteria to PPDB data. Further details on the HHP indicators are given in the tables below. Neither the PHT nor the HHP hazard alerts take account of usage patterns or exposure, thus they do not represent risk.

| Chemical structure |
|
Fenoxaprop-ethyl exhibits stereoisomerism due to the presence of a chiral centre, allowing it to exist as two enantiomers: the R-isomer and the S-isomer. The biologically active form is fenoxaprop-P-ethyl, which is the R-enantiomer, while the S-isomer (fenoxaprop-M-ethyl) is significantly less effective as a herbicide.

|
The commercial production of fenoxaprop-ethy; begins with the construction of the benzoxazole ether intermediate, typically formed by reacting 6-chlorobenzoxazole with a phenoxypropionic acid derivative. This intermediate is then esterified with ethanol to produce the ethyl ester form -fenoxaprop-ethyl. Since no chiral resolution is applied during synthesis, both enantiomers are retained in the final product.
|
Data for the amount of life cycle GHGs produced by fenoxaprop-ethyl are not available in the public domain. However, whilst estimates vary, more general data suggests that between 18 and 27 kilograms of CO₂e is emitted per kilogram of herbicide produced. |
